About Professor Brown
I’m Professor Brown, a gardening and sustainability educator based in Southern California. I teach regenerative gardening and sustainability at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, California, working with students of all ages and experience levels.
I created Growing With Professor Brown to make practical, science-based gardening and sustainability education accessible beyond the college classroom—for students, home gardeners, and anyone interested in growing food and caring for the land.
Background & Education
My academic background includes a B.S. in Environmental Biology and a Master’s degree in Regenerative Studies from the Lyle Center at Cal Poly Pomona. My foundation in the field began with two A.S. degrees in Ornamental Horticulture and Integrated Pest Management (IPM), providing me with a technical and science-based perspective on plant health and ecological balance.
My research and teaching focus on soil health, ecological restoration, and regenerative education. My work bridges academic research and real-world gardening, emphasizing approaches that are effective, sustainable, and accessible to everyday growers. You can read my Master’s thesis on environmental education in K-3 classrooms here.
Teaching & Community Work
At Mt. San Antonio College, I pioneered the development of the first state-approved college course on Regenerative Gardening (developing it from the original Home Gardening course). This course was designed to provide a rigorous, science-based foundation for sustainable garden management.
In addition to my work at Mt. SAC, I develop free educational resources through this website and my YouTube channel. My work focuses on:
Regenerative and Sustainable Gardening
Soil Health and Ecological Literacy
Water-wise and Climate-appropriate Practices for Southern California
Garden-based Education and Community Learning
The 8 Principles of Regenerative Gardening
While my college curriculum provides the foundation, I have developed a unique framework to help gardeners apply these concepts at home:
